If you’re new to photography or have recently bought your first camera, you might feel like this lovely new piece of kit should be a lot of fun, but getting to grips with it can be a bit daunting. There’s buttons, dials and switches all over the place, all marked with numbers and letters but you haven’t got a clue what any of them mean. It can feel like there’s so much you need to learn, even the unfamiliar language which will help make sense of it all, terms like Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance and so on.
Relax… it’s not that scary!
I’ve been teaching photography for over 10 years and have successfully taught hundreds of people how to use their cameras. Join me on a Beginners Photography Workshop and learn how to take control of your camera and start your creative journey. I’ve even seen some former students go on to launch successful careers of their own or host their own solo photography exhibitions.
My beginner’s photography workshops are informal, relaxed and always geared towards individual learning styles. While there is always a certain amount of technical explanation required, it’s not as intimidating as it seems; sessions are very ‘hands on’ and you have time to carry out exercises to practice the techniques so that you really understand them.

Beginners Photography Workshop Details
Beginners Photography Workshops are relaxed and fun. We meet in a central London location and spend the first half of the session sitting down with a coffee learning how your camera works, what the settings mean and how to adjust them, followed by a couple of hours putting it all in to practice.
I’ve seen a lot of photography tutors and schools that offer introductory courses outlining the camera’s semi-automatic mode first and then offer follow-on courses to ‘take it to the next level’. I don’t do that. Experience has shown me that anyone can learn to take complete control of their camera in full manual mode, even as an absolute beginner. I guarantee that if you attend my Beginners Photography Workshop, you’ll be confident in using your camera and the only next steps you’ll want to take will be to learn genuinely more advanced photographic techniques like long exposure, off camera flash, or studio lighting etc.
Workshops are limited in size to no more than four people which means that everyone gets the individual attention they need. For larger groups, or for camera clubs or corporate style photography groups please contact me to discuss details.
Participants receive a double sided “Cheat Sheet”, a quick reference guide with all the important information you need to know (one side of which is the image above)
Session Duration
Sessions last approximately five hours
Location
I like to run the workshops in a location where students find plenty of opportunities to find interesting subject matter to photograph. I like to use the area around the Southbank and often use the publicly available space in the Royal Festival Hall to start the sessions. Other locations are also available.
Detailed joining instructions will be sent on receipt of payment.
To attend a beginners photography workshop, please refer to the calendar for upcoming scheduled dates. If there are no dates shown, it means I haven’t updated my calendar so just get in touch to arrange a date that suits you.
